USA: CHILLED & FROZEN TUNA

No. 11/2024
15 November 2024
The demand pattern for non-canned tuna in the United States started to improve from the second quarter of 2024 along with recovery in the frozen fillets market, even though demand for fresh tuna has been weak. Overall growth in non-canned tuna imports was 7.3% during January-September 2024 at 51 326 MT; which had a Customs declared value of US$639 million. The product group responsible for this positive development is the ‘frozen tuna fillets’ for which imports increased by 17.3% (30 811 MT and US$ 348.70 million) year-on-year. The leading suppliers were Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines and Taiwan.
As of September 2024, the average import value of frozen tuna fillets in the USA was more than double at US$11.20 per kg, in comparison with price of the popular canned tuna group (US$5.05 /kg). Consumer demand for canned and processed tuna in the US market seemed to have reached saturation levels whereas it is still growing for non-canned tuna group - sashimi and non-sashimi alike.
