JAPAN: CHILLED & FROZEN TUNA

No. 11/2024
15 November 2024
Toyosu Fish Market: Since the beginning of the autumn season in October, tuna trading in the sashimi market has been active with firm prices. Current daily landings of fresh and frozen tuna, (bigeye and yellowfin), at the Toyosu auction market reached 280 MT, which is reasonably high. From mid-October, demand remains brisk at ‘end consumer’ level, associated with several celebrations till the New Year day in 2025.

During the first nine months of 2024, imports of deep-frozen tuna fillets in Japan have reached record high levels, at nearly fifty thousand MT. This has kept the overall import trend marginally positive during this period.

However, air-flown imports of fresh/chilled tuna during the first nine months of 2024 declined by 14.95 %. The Japanese HORECA sector (hotel, restaurant, and catering trade) on the other hand, remained well prepared with sufficient supplies of high quality imported deep-frozen tuna fillets for the year-end high consumption season.
