European Union: Shrimp

No. 11/2024
15 November 2024
Summer demand for shrimp was moderate particularly in the HORECA (hotel, restaurant and catering) business, in the southern belt of Europe. Imports increased in the EU during June and July to cater to this rising demand. However, imports slowed down since August in Spain, France, Italy, Denmark, the Kingdom of the Netherlands and Germany. Out side the EU, shrimp imports increased in the UK, Ukraine and Norway during this period.

Outlook
In general production of farmed shrimp is expected to be seasonally low during the next few months in Asia. Shrimp exporters from Ecuador are likely to intensify their marketing efforts during this period in the oriental markets outside China. During the winter months, the greenhouse aquaculture in China would be able to make up supply shortage of fresh shrimp in the domestic market, particularly during the Lunar New Year celebration in January-February. In general shrimp prices will improve during December-January in view of low supply and an increase in consumer demand.
